Art and Music
YWIES Yantai provides every student with a well rounded and balanced education. The arts are an essential aspect of the human experience, and are fundamental to the YWIES philosophy and objectives. We therefore ensure all students are exposed to a wide variety of music and arts throughout their school life.
YWIES Yantai includes an Artist-in-Residence Programme, a unique educational experience in which a working artist interacts creatively with students of all ages within the school’s educational programme. The artists lead various art projects across the school, as part of developing their own professional body of artwork. Students learn through experience about the dynamic art scene in China and worldwide, develop aesthetic sense and understanding and acquire their own creative artistic techniques and styles through working with someone who makes a living from being an artist.
Students receive violin lessons from Grade 1 to Grade 5, following which they may continue with the violin or learn another instrument. They have numerous opportunities to display their talents in school concerts and musicals or in other performances and showcases. This develops their self-confidence as they learn to perform on stage, as well as encouraging in them a lifelong appreciation for music.
Performing Arts and the development of confidence and self-expression is integral to our English curriculum, and is a central part of the teaching and Co-Curricular Programme at YWIES, starting from Kindergarten where students begin to learn to perform English and Chinese songs and dances on the stage for a variety of performances and celebrations. In Primary, students learn the fundamentals of Performing Arts, learning Dance in Grades 1 and 2 as part of their PE programme and then beginning formal Drama lessons in Grade 3. Our varied Drama, Dance and Music after-school activities also begin from Grade 1, and students can begin to perform in Whole School Plays and Musical Theatre Productions from Grade 3. In our Lower Secondary programme from Grades 6 to 9, all students learn Drama, Dance and Performance. In this way, all Lower Secondary students learn not only about drama skills and performance as an art form, they also develop stage presence and improve their presentation skills, equipping themselves for any future profession. Students have the option of taking Drama as a Cambridge IGCSE subject in Upper Secondary. Our theatre facilities, drama room and dance studio support a wide variety of productions, from intimate class performances to full-scale musicals for audiences in their hundreds. We also work in partnership with the renowned international touring company, White Horse Theatre, which makes annual visits to the school campus as well as contributing to the curriculum for both English and Drama.
